African Wildlife at Lake Nakuru, Kenya
Lake Nakuru National Park lies in the Great Rift Valley. The lake's abundance of algae attracts a vast number of flamingos that line the shore. On our visit there were estimated to be about 3 million in residence. Many other birds and wild animals inhabit the park, and the scenery is quite diverse including large acacias where Secretary Birds roost during the night.
Lake District
The Lake District, also known as the Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells), and its associations with William Wordsworth and other Lake Poets and also with Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. The Lake District National Park was established in 1951 and covers an area of 2,362 square kilometres. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017
Riga, Latvia - Art Nouveau Buildings
The Art Nouveau architecture in Riga makes up roughly one third of all the buildings in the centre of Riga, making Latvia's capital the city with the highest concentration of Art Nouveau architecture anywhere in the world. At the time these were constructed in the early 20th century Riga was a hotspot for the aristocracy and the upper classes of Europe.
Polar Bears, Canada
One of the largest concentrations of Polar Bears in the world occurs at Churchill, in Wapusk National Park, on the shores of Hudson bay, just prior to the big winter freeze when the bears can find their way out onto the sea ice to hunt seals. They are hungry, having been virtually fasting for 8 months. The 2 weeks before the freeze starts is a wonderful opportunity to see the bears up close; including mums with cubs from 2 seasons, males and younger males practicing their sparring.
Africa - the wildlife of the Maasai Mara, Kenya.
The Maasai Mara (locally known simply as The Mara), is a large national game reserve in Narok, Kenya, contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is named in honor of the Maasai people, the ancestral inhabitants of the area, who migrated to the area from the Nile Basin. (Maasai is also spelled Masai.)
Hadrian's Wall
One of Britain's most Iconic Roman remains is Hadrian's wall which stretches from one side of the country to the other. Built by the Roman's to protect its northern borders it is still in remarkably good condition and provides excellent walks and views of "this green and pleasant land".
Canterbury Cathedral
Canterbury Cathedral is the oldest English cathedral. It is in Kent and is World Heritage Listed. Of particular note are the stunning stained glass (lead-light) windows. Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt between 1070 and 1077. The east end was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the 12th century and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174, with significant eastward extensions to accommodate the flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral in 1170.
Malta, architecture and landmarks.
Malta is awash with interesting architecture from several periods of history including that of the Ottoman's whose architectural legacy is particularly seen in the casement windows which abound. Other architecture of note are the divers churches which range from simple country chapels to magnificent Baroque interiors.
Albatross
Albatrosses are very large seabirds in the family Diomedeidae. They range widely in the Southern Ocean and the North Pacific. They are amazing flyers and roam the oceans for years on end. Most species are monogamous, returnig to the same nesting sites where they conduct pair-bonding rituals before mating and when returning to each other while raising chicks. They were made famous in the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Africa - Serengeti national Park, Tanzania
The Serengiti is contiguous with the Maasai Mara in Kenya and is one of the world's largest remaining natural habitats. It is well known for its annual migrationof the wildebeest and plains zebra herds which roam south to north and then back again across the year following the rain and the new grass which results.
