Sophie Martin-Castex
From France, I moved to London 15 years ago. I joined UKlandscape.net as features editor in 2001 running the listing of photographic exhibitions. I then became familiar with famous photographers through my interviews for UKL. I met Fay Godwin several times and her black and white images came to me as a shock, pushing me to discover more about other classic photographers such as Bill Brandt, Ansel Adams or Michael Kenna . They all inspired me deeply as I feel connected to their strong and moody black and white images. Divided between two colours only, the landscape becomes a place to rest and meditate. The mind stays still and is ready to make its own journey in a monochromatic escape. I put a lot of my feelings and emotions in my images; they very often illustrate my inner self, the one aiming toward stillness, simplicity and harmony. For that, I don’t hesitate to desaturate, to push the contrast and to brutalise my photos. I create chaos to get some peace. But in real life: I’m colourful and cheerful!
