Mar's Wark Gate canvas
This ornate gate is on the East façade of Mar's Wark in Stirling, Scotland. Mar's Wark is a ruin built 1570–1572 by John Erskine, Regent of Scotland and Earl of Mar for the Erskine family, whose chief had become keeper of Stirling Castle. Wark is a Scots language word for work. Converted into a Workhouse (hence "Mar's Wark") in 1733. During the 1745 Jacobite rising, it was occupied by Jacobite troops and was badly damaged by cannon fire from the government garrison in the castle.
