Toned Black And White Images

Toned Black And White Images

Sometimes a straight black and white image can be just be a bit too stark, perhaps giving the photograph a cold feeling. Many times I like to give monochrome photographs a hint of colour, maybe a split toned image with cool blue in the shadows and warmer yellow, orange or red in the highlights. Or perhaps an old classic look with a sepia tint. If that's what you think is right for you please take a look at this small collection.

A small selection of landscape images from the southern half of the Peak District, particularly around north Derbyshire. There are photographs here from many of the well-known areas that hikers walk from Monsal Dale to Kinder Scout to the moors stretching out from Froggatt Edge. Many more are available from my main collection.

Black And White

Black And White

Black and white photography allows us to see line and shape in compositions more easily. Removing colour can help focus more on the story and emotion within the image that the photographer wants to show us. Some of the photos in this collection are developed as true black and white, some with very slight tints, but there are a couple that are as shown here as they were originally - naturally monochrome with just a hint of colour. Can you spot them?

Kinder Scout

Kinder Scout

Kinder Scout has long been a favourite area of moorland of mine. When I first clambered up from Edale back in the eighties I was amazed at what I saw, a world quite different from the countryside just a few hundred metres below. Since those early days of walking the muddy paths of the southern edge of Kinder Scout I think I've walked every square metre of the moor and sunk into many of the bogs (those that have walked on peat bog moors will know what I mean). In that time I've seen the welcome regeneration of the moorland, experienced the joys and the dangers of this wild moor, and learnt a lot along the way. I hope you enjoy these photographs in this collection as much as I enjoy Kinder Scout.

Trees

Whether you know much about trees or not I think we all love them just being there. Dotted along the pavement breaking up the harsh lines of a village or city, or in dense forests with their damp smells and twigs cracking underfoot, we love their beauty and diversity. And there are the fresh colours of spring and summer, the vibrancy of autumn and the bare silhouettes of winter. Do you have a favourite tree? This small collection has some of mine.
