Nigel Bullock
It was the morning of Thursday 31st March 1994 & I felt like a naughty schoolboy sat outside the headmasters office. I had only been living in Australia 4 years but I was about to be taken into my boss's office & be told I was being made redundant...albeit with a very modest payout to soften the blow. Yet strangely, I didn't have a feeling of foreboding or dread, but a sense that a newer brighter dawn had just broken. On a rash impulse I decided to blow a large slab of my redundancy on a trip around Australia, after all it did seem too good an opportunity to miss. So for the next 10 weeks , armed with a battered Olympus OM20 & a shedload of film, I went 'walkabout' round the proverbial Lucky Country. Never having had any formal photography training I battled away. But I soon realised it wasn't really about photography, it was about being amongst it, enjoying the stark beauty, the silence, and the changing light. Then hoping in a tiny way that I could do justice on film to what I was seeing...to capture those 'glad to be alive' moments. I guess I found two major things on that first trip around Australia - if you find a job you love you'll never have to work again and in a photographic sense you learn more from your mistakes than you do from your successes and believe me my mistakes were plentiful! The photos from this trip were the start of my portfolio. I spent the next 5 years working part time to supplement the income I earned from my fledgling business until it was eventually time to take the plunge. It has not been easy with many ups & downs - it took me 7 years before I actually bought my first new camera rather than the second hand ones I'd been using - it's true, having top tackle isn't everything! In 2006 my world changed, I ventured into the world of digital and photoshop. After all those years working with film and an outstanding pro lab, it was akin to working with one hand tied behind your back. I was never in total control. I used to be something of a purist, but I do see photography as an art form. The great artists from Constable to Picasso have given us something for the eyes to feast upon, to feel a connection with but above all, to enjoy. So occasionally, if the photoshop controls are tweaked to add a new dimension to an image that increases the optical pleasure, I feel we should embrace it. Thanks for taking the time to scroll down & read my mutterings and please don't hesitate to have a look round. I hope you enjoy viewing the pictures as much as I did taking them.
